Details

This class is designed to serve as an introduction to mosaic portraits using stained glass materials and a simple color palate. This stylized approach relies heavily on the contrast and gradation of light to depict the human face. Students will be able to submit a photo to the instructor who will digitally edit the image prior to the first class. Collaboration between the students and instructor on the final image will occur via email correspondence and the enlarged image will be finalized in preparation of the first day of class. In class, the student will trace the modified image onto a 12 x 16 wooden substrate and choose the color palate. We will be using the direct method (with a non-toxic adhesive) to place the glass onto the wooden substrate. Cutting techniques and style options will be reviewed throughout the class. Instruction and supplies for grouting and hanging will also be included on the final day. Experience with glass cutting using nippers recommended; however, beginners can arrange to arrive to class early for an introduction to glass cutting. Materials and tools are included in the cost of the class. Please note: This is not a workshop for absolute beginners. Students should have a moderate amount experience in creating mosaics and at least basic glass cutting skills.
